WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.680 Hey there, welcome back. So, in the last lesson 00:00:03.680 --> 00:00:06.120 we looked at the eight differences between 00:00:06.120 --> 00:00:11.580 formal, informal and semi-formal letters. Now, 00:00:11.580 --> 00:00:14.040 in today's video we're going to be focusing 00:00:14.040 --> 00:00:19.940 on formal letters. So, let's have a look at an 00:00:19.940 --> 00:00:23.080 example. It says, "You recently bought 00:00:23.080 --> 00:00:25.730 some new furniture for your living room online. 00:00:25.730 --> 00:00:28.160 You were told that the furniture would arrive 00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:32.200 within five working days, but it has been two 00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:35.560 weeks and it has still not arrived. You 00:00:35.560 --> 00:00:39.100 phoned the shop but no action was taken. Write a 00:00:39.100 --> 00:00:42.520 letter to the shop manager. In the letter, 00:00:42.520 --> 00:00:45.310 explain that the furniture has not arrived. Des 00:00:45.310 --> 00:00:47.440 cribe what happened when you phoned the 00:00:47.440 --> 00:00:51.860 shop and say what you would like the manager to 00:00:51.860 --> 00:00:55.820 do." Now, remember, any letter that we 00:00:55.820 --> 00:00:57.970 write in IELTS is going to follow the same 00:00:57.970 --> 00:01:00.360 structure. We're going to start with the 00:01:00.360 --> 00:01:01.280 greeting, 00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:03.980 then we have the opener, we have the three 00:01:03.980 --> 00:01:07.240 bullet points in separate paragraphs, we have 00:01:07.240 --> 00:01:10.130 the closer, and then we finish with the sign-off 00:01:10.130 --> 00:01:13.440 . Now, the first thing that we're going to write 00:01:13.440 --> 00:01:16.270 is the greeting, and that's going to be given to 00:01:16.270 --> 00:01:18.920 you in the question paper. Because we are 00:01:18.920 --> 00:01:21.890 writing to the shop manager, it's going to be a 00:01:21.890 --> 00:01:24.520 formal letter, and our opener is going 00:01:24.520 --> 00:01:28.030 to be something like this, "Dear sir or madam," 00:01:28.030 --> 00:01:31.200 and then a comma. Now, you don't necessarily 00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:33.680 need to learn that because it's going to be in 00:01:33.680 --> 00:01:37.160 the question paper. So, your answer really 00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:41.230 starts here with the opener. Now, the opener 00:01:41.230 --> 00:01:45.080 gives the purpose of the letter, and we said 00:01:45.080 --> 00:01:48.910 with formal letters we keep this brief. Now, in 00:01:48.910 --> 00:01:52.200 order to know what the purpose of the letter 00:01:52.200 --> 00:01:56.700 is, we need to look at the question and identify 00:01:56.700 --> 00:02:01.360 why are we writing this letter. So, I think 00:02:01.360 --> 00:02:06.030 the answer is here. "Say what you would like the 00:02:06.030 --> 00:02:09.720 manager to do." So, we've bought some 00:02:09.720 --> 00:02:14.340 furniture and it has not arrived. Well, I'd like 00:02:14.340 --> 00:02:18.440 a refund personally. So, I'm requesting 00:02:18.440 --> 00:02:22.780 a refund, which means the purpose of my letter 00:02:22.780 --> 00:02:26.760 is to make a request. So, I would write a 00:02:26.760 --> 00:02:30.660 opener a bit like this, "I am writing to request 00:02:30.660 --> 00:02:33.920 a refund for an armchair that I purchased 00:02:33.920 --> 00:02:37.430 from your online store several weeks ago." Okay, 00:02:37.430 --> 00:02:40.640 let's look at some of the useful language 00:02:40.640 --> 00:02:45.520 that I use. "I am writing to request." So, this 00:02:45.520 --> 00:02:48.720 is a fixed expression that we use when 00:02:48.720 --> 00:02:51.250 we're writing request letters, and there are 00:02:51.250 --> 00:02:53.920 different fixed expressions that we can use 00:02:53.920 --> 00:02:56.570 when we're writing different types of letter. So 00:02:56.570 --> 00:02:59.000 , for a request letter, we could say, "I'm 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:02.110 writing to request," and then explain what the 00:03:02.110 --> 00:03:05.020 request is. However, we could also have 00:03:05.020 --> 00:03:08.090 a letter of inquiry, in which case you would use 00:03:08.090 --> 00:03:10.800 a different opener and a different fixed 00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:14.970 expression. You could write something like this, 00:03:14.970 --> 00:03:17.680 "I'm writing to inquire about," and 00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:22.520 then what your inquiry is. Another very common 00:03:22.520 --> 00:03:26.600 question type in task one is to write a letter 00:03:26.600 --> 00:03:29.500 asking for permission to do something. So, if 00:03:29.500 --> 00:03:32.200 you have that, then your letter could start 00:03:32.200 --> 00:03:35.140 something like this, "I'm writing to request 00:03:35.140 --> 00:03:38.440 permission to," and then what you're requesting 00:03:38.440 --> 00:03:42.360 permission to do. Sometimes you have to give 00:03:42.360 --> 00:03:44.240 advice, in which case you could say, "Thank 00:03:44.240 --> 00:03:46.990 you for your letter requesting information about 00:03:46.990 --> 00:03:49.240 da-da-da. I hope the following advice 00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:52.190 will be of some help to you." So, that would be 00:03:52.190 --> 00:03:55.000 your opener, and if you're writing an apology 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:57.910 letter, your opener could be like this, "I'm 00:03:57.910 --> 00:04:00.840 writing to apologize for," and then explain 00:04:00.840 --> 00:04:04.230 what you're apologizing for. Okay, now, below 00:04:04.230 --> 00:04:06.800 this lesson, and don't go there yet, you'll 00:04:06.800 --> 00:04:10.080 find different fixed expressions for different 00:04:10.080 --> 00:04:13.140 letter types, and below that, you're going 00:04:13.140 --> 00:04:15.960 to find a quiz. So, after watching this video, 00:04:15.960 --> 00:04:18.520 and after watching this video, don't go to 00:04:18.520 --> 00:04:21.370 it yet. It's a good idea to look through those 00:04:21.370 --> 00:04:24.640 fixed expressions and do the quizzes below, 00:04:24.640 --> 00:04:27.710 and you don't need to necessarily learn all of 00:04:27.710 --> 00:04:30.760 the fixed expressions, but learn the ones 00:04:30.760 --> 00:04:33.940 that you think are useful to you, so the ones 00:04:33.940 --> 00:04:37.440 that you like and you think sound impressive. 00:04:37.440 --> 00:04:41.530 Okay, let's go back to our letter. So, after 00:04:41.530 --> 00:04:44.940 writing our greeting and our opener, we're 00:04:44.940 --> 00:04:48.110 going to focus on bullet point one. So, here it 00:04:48.110 --> 00:04:51.080 says, "Explain that the furniture has not 00:04:51.080 --> 00:04:55.750 arrived." Well, I'd say something like this, "I 00:04:55.750 --> 00:04:59.200 bought this item during your super sale, 00:04:59.200 --> 00:05:01.650 and I was informed that it would be arriving 00:05:01.650 --> 00:05:04.400 within five working days. This was particularly 00:05:04.400 --> 00:05:07.220 important for me because it was to be a present 00:05:07.220 --> 00:05:10.320 for my aunt. However, it has been two weeks, 00:05:10.320 --> 00:05:13.990 and I'm still waiting." Right, okay, let's look 00:05:13.990 --> 00:05:16.280 at some of the language that I've used 00:05:16.280 --> 00:05:21.010 in this letter. "I bought this item." So, I've 00:05:21.010 --> 00:05:24.760 said "this item" so that I'm not constantly 00:05:24.760 --> 00:05:27.950 repeating "armchair, armchair." So, remember, it 00:05:27.950 --> 00:05:30.240 's a good idea to use synonyms instead of 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:33.720 repeating the same nouns or verbs over and over 00:05:33.720 --> 00:05:36.680 again. So, I might say "armchair" in 00:05:36.680 --> 00:05:39.730 the opener, "this item" in bullet point one, and 00:05:39.730 --> 00:05:43.000 then later on I could refer to it as "the 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:47.960 chair." Okay, we also have "I was informed." So, 00:05:47.960 --> 00:05:50.520 that's a bit like saying "I was told," 00:05:50.520 --> 00:05:54.210 except "informed" is slightly more formal than " 00:05:54.210 --> 00:05:57.280 tell." But, both are acceptable. And 00:05:57.280 --> 00:06:00.140 notice I have "was informed." So, this is the 00:06:00.140 --> 00:06:03.320 passive structure, and that's very useful 00:06:03.320 --> 00:06:07.670 for formal letters. "I was informed that it 00:06:07.670 --> 00:06:12.400 would be arriving." Okay, "it would be arriving" 00:06:12.400 --> 00:06:15.230 is reported speech. So, for example, "the 00:06:15.230 --> 00:06:18.040 internet," or "when I made the purchase," 00:06:18.040 --> 00:06:21.000 would say "it will be arriving within five days 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:23.880 ," or "it will arrive within five days." 00:06:23.880 --> 00:06:28.590 Now, when I'm reporting what I read, I would say 00:06:28.590 --> 00:06:32.440 "it said that it would arrive within five 00:06:32.440 --> 00:06:36.830 days." So, "will" becomes "would" in reported 00:06:36.830 --> 00:06:41.000 speech. Again, this is very useful for formal 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:44.170 letters, where you're reporting what somebody 00:06:44.170 --> 00:06:47.200 has told you, or you're reporting something 00:06:47.200 --> 00:06:50.200 that you've read on the internet. Okay, let's 00:06:50.200 --> 00:06:52.640 look at some more of the language. I've got 00:06:52.640 --> 00:06:55.520 "however," so that's a very useful linking word 00:06:55.520 --> 00:06:58.120 that you'll use in task two all the time, 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:01.480 and we also use "however" in formal letters. 00:07:01.480 --> 00:07:05.200 Okay, let's move on to bullet point two, and 00:07:05.200 --> 00:07:07.190 in this bullet point, we're going to be 00:07:07.190 --> 00:07:09.600 describing what happened when you phoned the 00:07:09.600 --> 00:07:11.400 shop. This 00:07:11.400 --> 00:07:15.210 is what I'd write. "I called your store last 00:07:15.210 --> 00:07:17.670 week and spoke to one of your customer 00:07:17.670 --> 00:07:18.640 assistants. 00:07:18.640 --> 00:07:20.860 He told me that my chair had already been 00:07:20.860 --> 00:07:23.440 shipped, but was unable to provide me with 00:07:23.440 --> 00:07:25.730 a tracking number. When I asked to be 00:07:25.730 --> 00:07:28.730 transferred to a manager, he outright refused, 00:07:28.730 --> 00:07:29.400 claiming 00:07:29.400 --> 00:07:33.190 that they were busy. I find this service to be 00:07:33.190 --> 00:07:36.520 far below the standards that your store 00:07:36.520 --> 00:07:40.210 claims in its advertisements." Alright, okay, so 00:07:40.210 --> 00:07:42.720 that's bullet point two. Now let's look 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:45.540 at some of the language I use. So, "customer 00:07:45.540 --> 00:07:48.480 assistant," so that's specific to this type 00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:52.030 of letter. "Customer assistant" works in a shop, 00:07:52.030 --> 00:07:55.240 and I call the customer assistant. It's 00:07:55.240 --> 00:07:58.770 kind of like saying, "I spoke to the waiter," if 00:07:58.770 --> 00:08:01.480 you were in a cafe or a restaurant. We've 00:08:01.480 --> 00:08:05.550 got "had already been shipped." Okay, so that's 00:08:05.550 --> 00:08:09.320 reported speech again, because the customer 00:08:09.320 --> 00:08:12.680 assistant tells me on the phone, "It has already 00:08:12.680 --> 00:08:16.360 been shipped." Now I'm reporting what he says, 00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:20.770 and "has" becomes "had." So I say, "He told me 00:08:20.770 --> 00:08:24.720 that my chair had already been shipped." 00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:29.010 So again, reported speech is very useful for 00:08:29.010 --> 00:08:33.640 general task one. Next we have "was unable." 00:08:33.640 --> 00:08:36.970 So one that "was unable" just means "couldn't," 00:08:36.970 --> 00:08:40.520 but it's a more formal way of saying "couldn't." 00:08:40.520 --> 00:08:44.120 And these little differences are what gets you a 00:08:44.120 --> 00:08:46.760 higher score in task one. We also have 00:08:46.760 --> 00:08:50.780 "outright refused." "He outright refused." So 00:08:50.780 --> 00:08:54.020 again, this is just like saying "refused" 00:08:54.020 --> 00:08:58.140 or "declined," except making it a bit more 00:08:58.140 --> 00:09:01.040 exciting. Now normally we don't use these 00:09:01.040 --> 00:09:04.720 kind of intensifying adjectives, but they're a 00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:07.960 good way of showing advanced language for 00:09:07.960 --> 00:09:12.700 your task one questions. Then afterwards we have 00:09:12.700 --> 00:09:15.560 "far below." So "far below the standards 00:09:15.560 --> 00:09:18.810 that your store claims in its advertisements." 00:09:18.810 --> 00:09:21.480 And again, I'm just emphasizing that it's 00:09:21.480 --> 00:09:24.140 "below the standards." It's "far below the 00:09:24.140 --> 00:09:27.680 standards." Right, let's move on to bullet 00:09:27.680 --> 00:09:29.840 point three, and this is what I would say. "I 00:09:29.840 --> 00:09:32.120 would like to express my dissatisfaction 00:09:32.120 --> 00:09:34.750 with the service I received and request that you 00:09:34.750 --> 00:09:37.280 cancel the order. Additionally, I would 00:09:37.280 --> 00:09:40.550 appreciate a full refund, which includes postage 00:09:40.550 --> 00:09:43.400 fees, if the chair is on its way to my home, 00:09:43.400 --> 00:09:45.470 which I highly doubt. I shall be sending it 00:09:45.470 --> 00:09:48.720 right back to you." Okay, so you can tell 00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:51.610 I'm quite annoyed now. Let's look at some of the 00:09:51.610 --> 00:09:54.640 language. "I would like to express 00:09:54.640 --> 00:09:58.130 my dissatisfaction." So that's the same as just 00:09:58.130 --> 00:10:01.280 saying "I am dissatisfied," except it's 00:10:01.280 --> 00:10:04.570 a more formal way of expressing that. So "I am 00:10:04.570 --> 00:10:07.720 dissatisfied." "I would like to express 00:10:07.720 --> 00:10:12.190 my dissatisfaction." Or you could say "I am 00:10:12.190 --> 00:10:16.440 happy." Or "I would like to express my happiness 00:10:16.440 --> 00:10:20.150 or my gratification." Okay, so a useful phrase 00:10:20.150 --> 00:10:23.180 that we can use in our formal letters. We 00:10:23.180 --> 00:10:26.460 also have "request that you cancel the order." 00:10:26.460 --> 00:10:29.160 So I'm not saying "I want you to cancel the 00:10:29.160 --> 00:10:33.790 order." I'm making it more formal by saying "I 00:10:33.790 --> 00:10:38.220 would request that you cancel the order." 00:10:38.220 --> 00:10:41.370 We have "additionally," which again is a formal 00:10:41.370 --> 00:10:44.240 linking word and very useful for task one 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:47.480 formal letters. And we have "would appreciate a 00:10:47.480 --> 00:10:50.680 full refund." So again, I'm not saying "I 00:10:50.680 --> 00:10:53.830 want a full refund." I'm saying "I would 00:10:53.830 --> 00:10:57.200 appreciate a full refund." And that's more 00:10:57.200 --> 00:10:57.920 polite and 00:10:57.920 --> 00:11:01.700 more formal. Okay, and then we also have "shall 00:11:01.700 --> 00:11:04.800 ," which is a modal verb, which we don't really 00:11:04.800 --> 00:11:07.470 use when we're speaking, but it's the kind of 00:11:07.470 --> 00:11:09.680 modal verb that we can use in a formal 00:11:09.680 --> 00:11:14.370 letter. Okay, now we're going to move on to the 00:11:14.370 --> 00:11:17.560 closer. What do you think of this? "Please 00:11:17.560 --> 00:11:20.920 reply to confirm the cancellation and refund at 00:11:20.920 --> 00:11:24.000 your earliest convenience." So nice and 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:27.470 short, and again we're using a fixed expression. 00:11:27.470 --> 00:11:30.320 "Please reply to confirm the cancellation 00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:34.440 and refund at your earliest convenience." So we 00:11:34.440 --> 00:11:37.120 've got this useful language, which is 00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:40.680 a fixed expression for when we write a closer 00:11:40.680 --> 00:11:44.440 for a request letter. And we have different 00:11:44.440 --> 00:11:47.010 closers and different fixed expressions for 00:11:47.010 --> 00:11:49.480 different letters. So here we have the one 00:11:49.480 --> 00:11:51.930 for a request letter. If we're writing a 00:11:51.930 --> 00:11:54.590 permission letter, then we might want to end 00:11:54.590 --> 00:11:55.920 like this. 00:11:55.920 --> 00:12:00.140 "Thank you for considering my request to..." "ad 00:12:00.140 --> 00:12:03.400 vice. I hope that you found these recommendations 00:12:03.400 --> 00:12:06.440 of use. Please do not hesitate to contact me 00:12:06.440 --> 00:12:09.320 should you have any further questions and 00:12:09.320 --> 00:12:12.560 an apology. Once again, I'm sorry for any 00:12:12.560 --> 00:12:15.360 inconvenience caused." And again, it's a good 00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:17.820 idea to look through the list of fixed 00:12:17.820 --> 00:12:20.930 expressions, which are below this lesson. Do the 00:12:20.930 --> 00:12:21.520 quiz and 00:12:21.520 --> 00:12:24.740 try to remember a few of these fixed expressions 00:12:24.740 --> 00:12:27.880 that you can use in different letter types. 00:12:27.880 --> 00:12:30.620 Okay, now we finish with the sign-off. And the 00:12:30.620 --> 00:12:33.000 sign-off, because we start with "Dear 00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:37.730 Sir or Madam" is going to be "Yours faithfully, 00:12:37.730 --> 00:12:41.200 and then your name." So when we start with 00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:44.210 "Dear Sir or Madam," we have "Yours faithfully." 00:12:44.210 --> 00:12:46.120 When we start with "Dear," and then we have 00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:48.660 a name, and it's a formal or semi-formal letter, 00:12:48.660 --> 00:12:51.240 we're going to start, we're going to end with 00:12:51.240 --> 00:12:56.630 "Yours sincerely." So that's our sign-off. Now 00:12:56.630 --> 00:13:00.480 let's have a look at our answer in whole. 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:03.770 So here it is now, and you'll see from the 00:13:03.770 --> 00:13:07.440 structure, we have a nice short opener. It's 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:10.390 just one sentence long, and that's typical. We 00:13:10.390 --> 00:13:12.800 have short openers and short closers in 00:13:12.800 --> 00:13:15.820 formal letters. When we talk about bullet point 00:13:15.820 --> 00:13:19.760 one, we have three sentences. So when 00:13:19.760 --> 00:13:22.180 you talk about each bullet point, you want 00:13:22.180 --> 00:13:24.920 between three and four sentences, okay? Because 00:13:24.920 --> 00:13:27.280 that shows the examiner that you're fully 00:13:27.280 --> 00:13:29.840 developing each bullet point. So bullet point 00:13:29.840 --> 00:13:33.720 one has three sentences, bullet point two has 00:13:33.720 --> 00:13:37.160 four, bullet point three has three sentences, 00:13:37.160 --> 00:13:40.010 and then our closer has one sentence, and then 00:13:40.010 --> 00:13:43.200 we have the sign-off. So in total, the 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:47.380 word count is 204 words, which is what you'd 00:13:47.380 --> 00:13:50.920 really be hoping to write for a high-level 00:13:50.920 --> 00:13:55.240 task one answer. Remember, the minimum is 150 00:13:55.240 --> 00:13:58.440 words, but if you want to be scoring seven, 00:13:58.440 --> 00:14:02.240 eight, or nine in general task one, then you 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:06.440 really want to be writing over 170 and more 00:14:06.440 --> 00:14:10.830 like 190 or 200 words. Again, it depends on the 00:14:10.830 --> 00:14:13.520 letter and how much detail you want to 00:14:13.520 --> 00:14:17.480 go into, but if you can write a letter of 204 or 00:14:17.480 --> 00:14:20.800 more words in 20 minutes, then that's 00:14:20.800 --> 00:14:23.860 great. Go for those details as long as they're 00:14:23.860 --> 00:14:27.440 relevant. Okay, so in the last lesson, we 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:30.220 looked at eight differences between formal and 00:14:30.220 --> 00:14:32.540 informal letters, and we're just going 00:14:32.540 --> 00:14:36.630 to check the criteria now to make sure that our 00:14:36.630 --> 00:14:40.200 formal letter is acceptable. The first 00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:42.590 one, we have an appropriate greeting and sign- 00:14:42.590 --> 00:14:45.160 off. The second, we have an appropriate opener 00:14:45.160 --> 00:14:48.820 and closer. Number three, no contractions in 00:14:48.820 --> 00:14:52.440 formal letters. Number four, formal linking 00:14:52.440 --> 00:14:55.980 words. Number five, not many idioms or phrasal 00:14:55.980 --> 00:14:59.700 verbs. Number six, not many intensifying adject 00:14:59.700 --> 00:15:00.120 ives 00:15:00.120 --> 00:15:04.050 or adverbs. Number seven, polite when making 00:15:04.050 --> 00:15:07.760 requests and asking questions. And number 00:15:07.760 --> 00:15:11.820 eight, no exclamation marks. Okay, so let's see 00:15:11.820 --> 00:15:15.240 how our letter does. So, an appropriate 00:15:15.240 --> 00:15:17.710 greeting and sign-off, yes, we've got Dear Sir 00:15:17.710 --> 00:15:20.080 or Madam, and we've got Yours Faithfully, 00:15:20.080 --> 00:15:22.970 Rachel Buchanan. By the way, I've just invented 00:15:22.970 --> 00:15:25.840 that name, and feel free to invent any name. 00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:28.660 I like to put in very English-sounding names in 00:15:28.660 --> 00:15:31.560 the sign-off. Just make sure that you write 00:15:31.560 --> 00:15:36.080 a name. Okay, next, an appropriate opener and 00:15:36.080 --> 00:15:38.320 closer, yes, we've got the opener and 00:15:38.320 --> 00:15:40.780 we've got the closer, and they're both short and 00:15:40.780 --> 00:15:42.720 to the point, which is what you need in 00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:46.990 a formal letter. We've got no contractions, good 00:15:46.990 --> 00:15:50.320 . We've got formal linking words like 00:15:50.320 --> 00:15:54.150 however, and additionally, we've got not many 00:15:54.150 --> 00:15:57.800 idioms or phrasal verbs. I looked through, 00:15:57.800 --> 00:16:00.700 I couldn't find any idioms or phrasal verbs, but 00:16:00.700 --> 00:16:03.240 you might be able to find some. The main 00:16:03.240 --> 00:16:07.020 point is that there are not many idioms or phras 00:16:07.020 --> 00:16:10.520 al verbs in formal letters. Number six, 00:16:10.520 --> 00:16:13.170 not many intensifying adjectives or adverbs. 00:16:13.170 --> 00:16:15.300 Okay, I do have quite a few. We've got 00:16:15.300 --> 00:16:16.200 particularly 00:16:16.200 --> 00:16:19.970 important, outright refused, far below the 00:16:19.970 --> 00:16:24.120 standards, highly doubt, so four intensifying 00:16:24.120 --> 00:16:28.170 adjectives and adverbs. Normally, there would be 00:16:28.170 --> 00:16:31.360 more in informal letters, and you'll see 00:16:31.360 --> 00:16:34.560 that when we focus on informal letters later on 00:16:34.560 --> 00:16:38.520 in this course. Okay, number seven, polite 00:16:38.520 --> 00:16:41.910 when making requests and asking questions. Yes, 00:16:41.910 --> 00:16:44.440 very polite. We can see that here and 00:16:44.440 --> 00:16:47.860 here. Okay, remember, formal letters should be 00:16:47.860 --> 00:16:50.960 polite. Even if you're unhappy, which for 00:16:50.960 --> 00:16:54.490 example I am in this letter, I'm quite clearly 00:16:54.490 --> 00:16:57.280 unhappy, but I'm still very polite when making 00:16:57.280 --> 00:17:01.910 requests and asking questions. It's all about 00:17:01.910 --> 00:17:06.400 being passive aggressive. Okay, and finally, 00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:09.420 number eight, no exclamation marks. So we have 00:17:09.420 --> 00:17:12.120 no exclamation marks. Right, I hope this 00:17:12.120 --> 00:17:14.830 video has helped, and remember below you're 00:17:14.830 --> 00:17:17.720 going to have some quizzes, some useful fixed 00:17:17.720 --> 00:17:21.320 expressions and some more quizzes. So do those 00:17:21.320 --> 00:17:24.600 before going on to the next lesson where you 00:17:24.600 --> 00:17:27.160 are going to be writing a formal letter. Okay, 00:17:27.160 --> 00:17:29.440 best of luck with your studies and I'll see 00:17:29.440 --> 00:17:31.560 you in the next lesson. Bye. 00:17:31.560 --> 00:17:36.240 [music] 00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:38.240 [END] 00:17:38.240 --> 00:17:48.240 [BLANK_AUDIO]
