WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.030 Hello and welcome. My name is Eli and today we 00:00:04.030 --> 00:00:05.520 're looking at the different 00:00:05.520 --> 00:00:09.210 graphic types that can appear in Academic Task 1 00:00:09.210 --> 00:00:12.320 . Let's get into it. 00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:16.340 Welcome back. We're going to look at the 00:00:16.340 --> 00:00:19.960 different graphic types that can appear 00:00:19.960 --> 00:00:23.580 in Academic Task 1 and what should be included 00:00:23.580 --> 00:00:25.560 in your answer. Let's have a 00:00:25.560 --> 00:00:29.760 look at the slides. So there are eight different 00:00:29.760 --> 00:00:32.640 graphic types. We have tables, 00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:38.170 line graphs, bar graphs, a stacked bar graph, 00:00:38.170 --> 00:00:41.760 pie charts, process diagram, map 00:00:41.760 --> 00:00:46.020 diagrams and even a combination of these. So for 00:00:46.020 --> 00:00:48.600 example here we have a bar graph 00:00:48.600 --> 00:00:51.880 and a pie chart. It's important that you 00:00:51.880 --> 00:00:54.240 practice all of these different graphic 00:00:54.240 --> 00:00:58.000 types before you go to do your IELTS writing 00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:00.320 exam. And what we're going to do 00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:02.940 today in this video is actually go through each 00:01:02.940 --> 00:01:04.440 of these different graphic 00:01:04.440 --> 00:01:07.470 types and talk about what your answer needs to 00:01:07.470 --> 00:01:11.040 include. Now before we do that 00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:14.160 we need to have a look at what the examiner is 00:01:14.160 --> 00:01:16.160 looking for in your answer, 00:01:16.160 --> 00:01:19.710 especially in regard to task achievement. The 00:01:19.710 --> 00:01:21.760 first thing is that you mention all 00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:25.840 of the key features. So for example if you have 00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:28.040 a table that mentions six 00:01:28.040 --> 00:01:31.000 countries you need to mention all six of those 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.600 countries. If you only mention five 00:01:33.600 --> 00:01:37.390 of those countries you will be marked down. 00:01:37.390 --> 00:01:39.760 Secondly you need to have a clear 00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:43.530 overview. Now an overview is a general 00:01:43.530 --> 00:01:47.640 description of the graphic and we're 00:01:47.640 --> 00:01:50.740 going to cover that in its own video, but just 00:01:50.740 --> 00:01:53.640 to let you know it's very important 00:01:53.640 --> 00:01:57.140 that you have an overview. What I tell my 00:01:57.140 --> 00:01:58.440 students is it's a good 00:01:58.440 --> 00:02:02.080 idea to make it obvious that your answer has an 00:02:02.080 --> 00:02:04.280 overview by starting your 00:02:04.280 --> 00:02:07.260 overview with overall comma and then your 00:02:07.260 --> 00:02:09.800 overview. That way the examiner 00:02:09.800 --> 00:02:14.440 cannot miss it. You also need to have data or 00:02:14.440 --> 00:02:17.760 evidence from the graphic. So for 00:02:17.760 --> 00:02:20.720 example you can't just say Spain experienced 00:02:20.720 --> 00:02:22.720 rapid growth, you should say 00:02:22.720 --> 00:02:27.880 Spain experienced rapid growth from 3% in 1999 00:02:27.880 --> 00:02:32.840 to 42% in 2015. This is made-up 00:02:32.840 --> 00:02:35.510 data for the sake of this video, but 00:02:35.510 --> 00:02:38.360 highlighting the importance of including 00:02:38.360 --> 00:02:43.870 data in your analysis. The next thing is we need 00:02:43.870 --> 00:02:45.960 to make comparisons of the data. 00:02:45.960 --> 00:02:50.370 We can't just say China grew quickly, we should 00:02:50.370 --> 00:02:52.760 say China grew at a quicker rate 00:02:52.760 --> 00:02:58.680 than England over these years, for example. The 00:02:58.680 --> 00:03:00.480 final thing is we shouldn't 00:03:00.480 --> 00:03:04.030 have irrelevant or inaccurate information. So 00:03:04.030 --> 00:03:05.480 what is irrelevant and 00:03:05.480 --> 00:03:09.020 inaccurate information? Well irrelevant 00:03:09.020 --> 00:03:12.920 information is usually a hypothesis or 00:03:12.920 --> 00:03:16.900 speculating on the reasons for the graphic. This 00:03:16.900 --> 00:03:18.560 is something we do not need 00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:23.720 to do in task one. So for example a good answer 00:03:23.720 --> 00:03:25.480 would just be China's economy 00:03:25.480 --> 00:03:30.070 grew after 2002. A bad answer would be China's 00:03:30.070 --> 00:03:32.240 economy probably grew because of 00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:37.600 focus on technology. We don't need to speculate 00:03:37.600 --> 00:03:39.880 on the reasons behind the data, 00:03:39.880 --> 00:03:44.690 we just need to report and analyze the data. 00:03:44.690 --> 00:03:47.120 Also we should not include 00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:51.110 inaccurate information. Inaccurate information 00:03:51.110 --> 00:03:53.040 is when we report the data 00:03:53.040 --> 00:03:57.280 incorrectly. So for example it grew at 25% and 00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:00.440 we say it grew at 30%. These kind 00:04:00.440 --> 00:04:04.370 of inaccuracies will also mark us down for IELTS 00:04:04.370 --> 00:04:08.320 writing score. For the sake of 00:04:08.320 --> 00:04:10.620 this video we're going to focus mainly on the 00:04:10.620 --> 00:04:12.920 first category, mentioning the key 00:04:12.920 --> 00:04:18.480 features. So the first graphic type that we're 00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:22.200 going to focus on is the table. So 00:04:22.200 --> 00:04:25.410 here's a typical table graphic that we will see 00:04:25.410 --> 00:04:27.860 in an IELTS question. It says 00:04:27.860 --> 00:04:30.170 the table below shows the number of students who 00:04:30.170 --> 00:04:31.400 went abroad for further 00:04:31.400 --> 00:04:35.830 education from eight countries in 2005 and 2015 00:04:35.830 --> 00:04:37.520 and the percentage change 00:04:37.520 --> 00:04:43.200 between 2005 and 2015. So what kind of key 00:04:43.200 --> 00:04:45.400 information do we need in our answer? 00:04:45.400 --> 00:04:49.400 Well we have eight countries. We have Brazil, 00:04:49.400 --> 00:04:52.360 Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, 00:04:52.360 --> 00:04:55.900 South Korea and the United States. If you don't 00:04:55.900 --> 00:04:58.720 mention one of these countries you 00:04:58.720 --> 00:05:03.850 will be marked down. We also have two dates 2005 00:05:03.850 --> 00:05:06.920 and 2015. You need to mention 00:05:06.920 --> 00:05:10.520 both of these dates. And finally we also have a 00:05:10.520 --> 00:05:12.240 category on the percentage 00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:16.760 change. Again mention this otherwise you will 00:05:16.760 --> 00:05:22.120 lose marks. Ultimately in IELTS 00:05:22.120 --> 00:05:25.930 academic task one the more data the better. Now 00:05:25.930 --> 00:05:27.120 that's not to say that we 00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:30.240 should mechanically report data in the graphic. 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:32.840 For example in Brazil in 2005 00:05:32.840 --> 00:05:36.280 there were 11,000 students. In 2015 there were 00:05:36.280 --> 00:05:39.120 23,000 students. In Canada 00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:42.160 there were 37,000. We shouldn't do this. We 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:43.880 shouldn't mechanically report the 00:05:43.880 --> 00:05:47.860 data but the more data we report in a gramm 00:05:47.860 --> 00:05:51.680 atically sound way the better. 00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:55.450 Let's have a look at a... oh and one last thing. 00:05:55.450 --> 00:05:58.000 Remember don't speculate on why 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:01.790 the data has changed. So for example we don't 00:06:01.790 --> 00:06:04.880 need to say Chinese students went 00:06:04.880 --> 00:06:11.320 abroad more between 2005 and 2015 because there 00:06:11.320 --> 00:06:12.520 was a general trend in 00:06:12.520 --> 00:06:16.170 studying abroad. We don't need to speculate on 00:06:16.170 --> 00:06:17.840 the reasons behind the data. 00:06:17.840 --> 00:06:21.370 Let's continue. The next graphic type we're 00:06:21.370 --> 00:06:24.760 going to look at is a line graph 00:06:24.760 --> 00:06:28.940 or line chart. So what kind of key information 00:06:28.940 --> 00:06:30.920 do we have here? We should 00:06:30.920 --> 00:06:35.210 mention the different categories of sport. 00:06:35.210 --> 00:06:37.240 American football, baseball, 00:06:37.240 --> 00:06:40.450 basketball, hockey and other sports. So we 00:06:40.450 --> 00:06:42.560 should mention all five of these 00:06:42.560 --> 00:06:46.150 categories. It's a good idea to mention the 00:06:46.150 --> 00:06:49.280 order of favorite sports. So for 00:06:49.280 --> 00:06:52.750 example in 1985 we can see that American 00:06:52.750 --> 00:06:56.000 football was the most popular and other 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:59.440 sports were the least popular but then this 00:06:59.440 --> 00:07:03.880 trend changed by 2015. We should 00:07:03.880 --> 00:07:08.960 also mention the beginning and end dates. So 00:07:08.960 --> 00:07:10.800 1985 and 00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:17.440 2015. A good idea is also to mention when trends 00:07:17.440 --> 00:07:25.960 change. For example before 2005 we 00:07:25.960 --> 00:07:29.530 can see that other sports became more popular 00:07:29.530 --> 00:07:33.880 than hockey and just before 2010 00:07:33.880 --> 00:07:38.610 basketball became more popular than baseball. 00:07:38.610 --> 00:07:41.440 Again the more data the better. 00:07:41.440 --> 00:07:45.340 Some other data that we can include would be the 00:07:45.340 --> 00:07:47.560 gradual decline in hockey, 00:07:47.560 --> 00:07:51.800 the fact that basketball dipped in 1990 and the 00:07:51.800 --> 00:07:54.160 relatively steep and consistent 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:58.660 decline in baseball over the period. All of this 00:07:58.660 --> 00:08:00.640 data is useful to include and 00:08:00.640 --> 00:08:03.370 there's much much more data that we can include 00:08:03.370 --> 00:08:06.800 in our answer. The next graphic 00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:09.900 type that we're going to focus on are bar graphs 00:08:09.900 --> 00:08:12.840 . So here we have a typical bar 00:08:12.840 --> 00:08:16.670 graph question from the IELTS Academic Task 1 00:08:16.670 --> 00:08:19.280 and the key information are all 00:08:19.280 --> 00:08:24.000 four sectors. We have education, retail, finance 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:26.680 and IT. It's important that you 00:08:26.680 --> 00:08:30.340 mention all four of these and we have three 00:08:30.340 --> 00:08:36.040 dates 2008, 2018 and 2028 which is 00:08:36.040 --> 00:08:39.520 a prediction and it's important that we show the 00:08:39.520 --> 00:08:42.480 examiner that we realize 2028 00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:46.350 is a prediction. Again it's important, a good 00:08:46.350 --> 00:08:48.120 idea would be to mention when 00:08:48.120 --> 00:08:52.420 trends change and so for example the way that 00:08:52.420 --> 00:08:55.760 retail was the most popular in 2008 00:08:55.760 --> 00:09:01.240 but by 2028 finance, the finance sector is seen 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:04.280 to be more likely to be the most 00:09:04.280 --> 00:09:09.580 popular sector. Again the more data the better. 00:09:09.580 --> 00:09:10.840 So for example we could talk 00:09:10.840 --> 00:09:15.830 about the increases in popularity of IT or the 00:09:15.830 --> 00:09:20.400 large decrease in retail etc. 00:09:20.400 --> 00:09:25.340 Let's now focus on the stacked bar graph. So a 00:09:25.340 --> 00:09:27.920 stacked bar graph, what kind of 00:09:27.920 --> 00:09:31.190 key information do we have? Well we want to 00:09:31.190 --> 00:09:33.280 mention all five of the categories 00:09:33.280 --> 00:09:36.190 which in this case are all five store types, 00:09:36.190 --> 00:09:38.600 electronic stores, clothing stores, 00:09:38.600 --> 00:09:42.870 supermarkets, cafes and pharmacies. We also want 00:09:42.870 --> 00:09:44.800 to mention all three dates. 00:09:44.800 --> 00:09:49.860 We've got 2000, 2005 and 2010. If you miss out 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:52.200 one of these dates you will be 00:09:52.200 --> 00:09:55.110 marked down lower so make sure to mention all of 00:09:55.110 --> 00:09:57.560 them. We also when it 00:09:57.560 --> 00:10:01.230 comes to a stacked bar graph, we also have a 00:10:01.230 --> 00:10:03.240 general trend of all of the 00:10:03.240 --> 00:10:06.200 stores so we can see that that is rising. For 00:10:06.200 --> 00:10:09.400 example the the cumulative quantity 00:10:09.400 --> 00:10:13.870 of these stores is increasing between 2000 and 00:10:13.870 --> 00:10:16.560 2010 and we would want to 00:10:16.560 --> 00:10:20.280 mention that. Again we can mention what trends 00:10:20.280 --> 00:10:23.120 change and again the more data 00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:28.400 the better. Let's now look at pie charts. Again 00:10:28.400 --> 00:10:29.120 key 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:32.060 information, we've got three countries India, 00:10:32.060 --> 00:10:34.440 France and the United States. We 00:10:34.440 --> 00:10:38.540 also have different age categories under 18, 18 00:10:38.540 --> 00:10:43.560 to 30, 31 to 50 and over 51. It's 00:10:43.560 --> 00:10:47.800 always important to look at other numbers around 00:10:47.800 --> 00:10:48.840 the pie charts and 00:10:48.840 --> 00:10:52.170 here we have the total number of visitors. For 00:10:52.170 --> 00:10:54.280 example 6.58 million 00:10:54.280 --> 00:10:57.030 visitors to India. We also have a number for 00:10:57.030 --> 00:11:00.280 France and the United States. Again 00:11:00.280 --> 00:11:03.440 the more data the better. Let's look at the next 00:11:03.440 --> 00:11:06.040 graphic type which is a process 00:11:06.040 --> 00:11:10.680 diagram. Now this is the process for making a 00:11:10.680 --> 00:11:13.200 bottle of wine. What kind of 00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:15.830 information should we include in our answer? 00:11:15.830 --> 00:11:18.920 Well we have eight steps in total 00:11:18.920 --> 00:11:21.530 so it's important to mention all eight of those 00:11:21.530 --> 00:11:23.580 steps. We can also see from the 00:11:23.580 --> 00:11:27.210 graphic that the compost, the waste is composted 00:11:27.210 --> 00:11:29.500 and this happens at three 00:11:29.500 --> 00:11:32.690 different stages of the process of making wine 00:11:32.690 --> 00:11:34.640 so we would want to show the 00:11:34.640 --> 00:11:39.570 examiner that we noticed that. We can also point 00:11:39.570 --> 00:11:41.920 out that this is a process 00:11:41.920 --> 00:11:46.620 for making one bottle and again the more data 00:11:46.620 --> 00:11:48.880 the better. For example we can point 00:11:48.880 --> 00:11:52.010 out that there are 400 ripe grapes needed to 00:11:52.010 --> 00:11:54.240 make one bottle of wine. The 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:57.510 fermentation process takes two weeks and 00:11:57.510 --> 00:11:59.260 whatever other data we can 00:11:59.260 --> 00:12:05.040 extract from this diagram. Okay next we have a 00:12:05.040 --> 00:12:08.080 map diagram. So what kind of 00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:11.770 information should we include in a map diagram? 00:12:11.770 --> 00:12:14.260 Well we want to mention the 00:12:14.260 --> 00:12:18.040 time frames of the map. So we can see the first 00:12:18.040 --> 00:12:21.360 map is an office now, the second 00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:25.430 map is an office plan for 2025. So this is a 00:12:25.430 --> 00:12:28.180 plan for the future. We would want 00:12:28.180 --> 00:12:32.350 to emphasize that we have noticed that. A good 00:12:32.350 --> 00:12:34.500 idea when we have maps is to 00:12:34.500 --> 00:12:37.930 highlight all of the things that are the same 00:12:37.930 --> 00:12:39.260 and all of the things that are 00:12:39.260 --> 00:12:43.730 different between the two maps. Again the more 00:12:43.730 --> 00:12:46.700 data the better. The more that we 00:12:46.700 --> 00:12:50.400 can write in that 20 or 25 minutes that we give 00:12:50.400 --> 00:12:52.220 ourselves for task one the 00:12:52.220 --> 00:12:58.340 better. And finally more than one graphic. Now 00:12:58.340 --> 00:13:00.620 it's just important that you 00:13:00.620 --> 00:13:03.090 mention the two different types of graphic and a 00:13:03.090 --> 00:13:04.300 good way to do this is to 00:13:04.300 --> 00:13:07.600 focus on one graphic and then the next. In this 00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:09.660 example we would focus on the 00:13:09.660 --> 00:13:12.940 bar graph and we would point out that we have 00:13:12.940 --> 00:13:15.540 three regions, Latin America, the Far 00:13:15.540 --> 00:13:19.520 East and Africa and two dates. We would also 00:13:19.520 --> 00:13:21.580 look at the second bar graph and 00:13:21.580 --> 00:13:25.180 point out all of the costs that are associated. 00:13:25.180 --> 00:13:26.780 So that's the farmer cost, the 00:13:26.780 --> 00:13:30.250 shop staff taxes, export profit and shop and 00:13:30.250 --> 00:13:33.420 rent. And we would also want to 00:13:33.420 --> 00:13:37.350 mention the percentage of each cost. Again the 00:13:37.350 --> 00:13:40.700 more data the better. So in 00:13:40.700 --> 00:13:44.780 summary we can say there are eight different 00:13:44.780 --> 00:13:46.380 types of graphic and you 00:13:46.380 --> 00:13:49.830 should be practicing all of them before the IEL 00:13:49.830 --> 00:13:52.340 TS writing test. Don't miss out 00:13:52.340 --> 00:13:55.270 any of these key features whether it's a country 00:13:55.270 --> 00:13:57.380 , a date or a prediction because 00:13:57.380 --> 00:14:01.690 you will lose marks. So take four minutes to 00:14:01.690 --> 00:14:03.820 analyze the graphic before you start 00:14:03.820 --> 00:14:08.700 writing. You should report as much data as 00:14:08.700 --> 00:14:12.100 possible especially aiming if you're 00:14:12.100 --> 00:14:15.140 aiming for a band 7 or above. And again that is 00:14:15.140 --> 00:14:17.140 not to say we should mechanically 00:14:17.140 --> 00:14:20.450 explain all the data. We need to use different 00:14:20.450 --> 00:14:22.980 grammatical structures to 00:14:22.980 --> 00:14:26.850 analyze and show the data that we're 00:14:26.850 --> 00:14:32.140 highlighting from the graphic. Be accurate. 00:14:32.140 --> 00:14:35.790 Don't misreport the data. You will lose marks 00:14:35.790 --> 00:14:38.660 for that. And finally don't 00:14:38.660 --> 00:14:42.620 speculate on the reasons for the data. Just 00:14:42.620 --> 00:14:47.220 report and analyze it. Okay I hope 00:14:47.220 --> 00:14:51.000 that helps and I'll see you in the next video. 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:53.260 Bye then. 00:14:54.220 --> 00:14:56.280 you
